LAUSD ACADEMIC STARS SHINE IN ‘SUPER QUIZ’ COMPETITION
Franklin and Granada Hills TIED for first
Los Angeles – Franklin and Granada Hills high schools came out on top at the 2015 Los Angeles Unified School District’s (LAUSD) Academic Decathlon’s “Super Quiz” competition today, the culminating event of this year’s “battle of the brains” contest. The leading teams earned an unofficial score of 65 points each.
Right behind at 64 points were El Camino Real Charter High School and Marshall High School. El Camino is the reigning national champ.
In all, 59 teams of high school decathletes competed before a rousing crowd of family members, classmates, friends and District educators, including LAUSD Board Member Bennett Kayser, Chief Deputy Superintendent Michelle King, and instructional area superintendents, Byron Maltez and Dr. Robert Bravo. The event was held at the Roybal Learning Center in downtown Los Angeles.
Grant High School came in fourth with a score of 57points, while Bell High School nabbed fifth place, garnering 56 points.
Hamilton High School finished in sixth place with 54 points.
The teams rounding out the Top 10 in the “Super Quiz” competition were:
North Hollywood High School, with 51 points, followed, in order, by King-Drew (49 points), Lincoln (48 points) and Van Nuys High School (47 points).
This year’s study topic was “alternatives in energy.”
The winning team will be announced Friday, Feb. 13 at the LAUSD Academic Decathlon awards ceremony at Hollywood High School. The team with the highest score and additional wildcard teams will compete in the 2015 California Academic Decathlon, scheduled next month in Sacramento.
